Zhong Baoshen

Zhong Baoshen co-founded LONGi Green Energy in 2000 in Xi'an, China, and built it into the world's largest manufacturer of solar wafers and photovoltaic modules. LONGi's defining strategic bet was its commitment to monocrystalline silicon technology at a time when the solar industry predominantly used polycrystalline silicon (which was cheaper but less efficient). Zhong invested heavily in scaling monocrystalline production and driving down its costs, eventually proving that monocrystalline could be cost-competitive with polycrystalline while delivering higher efficiency. Today, monocrystalline technology accounts for over 95% of new solar installations globally — a validation of LONGi's vision. LONGi's vertically integrated manufacturing spans the entire solar value chain: polysilicon wafers, solar cells, and finished modules. The company's manufacturing capacity exceeds 100 GW annually, making it one of the most significant industrial operations in the renewable energy supply chain. LONGi has also been at the forefront of cell efficiency improvements, setting multiple world records for solar cell conversion efficiency. However, LONGi and the broader Chinese solar industry face severe challenges: massive overcapacity has driven module prices to historic lows, compressing margins industry-wide. Many Chinese solar manufacturers are operating at losses.
