Yuji Fukasawa

Yuji Fukasawa leads East Japan Railway (JR East), Japan's largest railway company by passenger volume and one of the busiest rail operators in the world. JR East operates the metropolitan Tokyo rail network — carrying millions of passengers daily through Shinjuku Station (the world's busiest train station) and other major hubs — as well as Shinkansen high-speed lines in eastern Japan and conventional lines serving the Tohoku and Koshinetsu regions. JR East's business model is uniquely diversified compared to global railway peers. The company has built extensive non-rail businesses around its stations and rail corridors: station retail complexes (Lumine, Ecute), convenience stores (NewDays), hotels (JR East Hotel Mets), shopping centers, and major real estate developments. The Takanawa Gateway City project — a massive mixed-use development near Shinagawa — represents one of Tokyo's most ambitious urban redevelopment initiatives and a significant growth driver for JR East. Fukasawa's management of post-pandemic commuter traffic recovery (which has structurally shifted due to remote work adoption), execution on the Takanawa Gateway City and other real estate developments, and operational efficiency across the vast rail network are the primary drivers of JR East's stock.
