William Eckhardt

Founder and President · Eckhardt Trading Company

Co-devised the Turtle system rules; founded Eckhardt Trading with strong long-term risk-adjusted performance; holds a PhD in mathematics from University of Chicago.

William Eckhardt earned his PhD in mathematical logic from the University of Chicago before joining Richard Dennis to trade commodity futures in the 1970s. While Dennis was the more famous and flamboyant trader, Eckhardt provided the rigorous mathematical framework that underpinned their shared trading approach. His doctorate in logic and mathematics gave him a systematic, first-principles perspective on market behaviour that distinguished their methods from other technical traders. Together with Dennis, he designed the Turtle trading system — a complete set of rules covering entry signals, position sizing, stop losses, and portfolio management — which was taught to 23 novice traders in 1983. Eckhardt held the more sceptical view: he believed trading success required natural talent, not just rule-following. The Turtle experiment partially disproved his thesis. Eckhardt founded Eckhardt Trading Company in 1991, applying his own systematic trend-following strategies independently of Dennis. The fund has maintained positive long-term performance across multiple decades. Eckhardt has contributed philosophical papers questioning the relationship between randomness, determinism, and trading edge. He remains active in research on market microstructure and trend persistence, embodying the rare combination of pure mathematical rigour and practical trading expertise.
