William Dudley

Former New York Fed President · Federal Reserve Bank of New York (formerly)

Federal Reserve monetary policy, QE implementation, New York Fed market operations, FOMC communication, financial stability oversight

William Dudley served as President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 2009 to 2018, one of the most consequential periods in Federal Reserve history. Before the Fed, he was Chief US Economist at Goldman Sachs, where he developed expertise in monetary policy analysis. At the NY Fed, he oversaw the implementation of quantitative easing programs, the unwinding of crisis-era extraordinary measures, and financial system supervision. The NY Fed's unique role as a permanent FOMC voter and as the implementer of open market operations gave Dudley's views particular weight in monetary policy deliberations. He has since been an active Bloomberg opinion columnist and commentary provider on monetary policy. As NY Fed President, he also played a central role in the oversight of the largest US financial institutions and was involved in the management of the tri-party repo market reform process — a critical post-crisis effort to reduce systemic risk in wholesale funding markets. He served on the Financial Stability Board and BIS committees, contributing to international regulatory coordination in the post-crisis period.
