Modern Monetary Theory origins, currency systems, government deficit finance, trading-based economic theory

Warren Mosler is a hedge fund manager and the originator of Modern Monetary Theory. His self-published 1993 paper "Soft Currency Economics" drew on his experience trading Italian lira government securities to develop a framework arguing that governments that issue their own currency cannot go broke in the way households can, and that government deficits are the accounting counterpart of private sector savings. Mosler's practical insights were later refined into the academic MMT framework by economists including Wray, Kelton, and others. His unique combination of practical market trading experience and monetary theory has given MMT a practitioner-grounded foundation that distinguishes it from purely academic macroeconomic frameworks, making his original insights particularly influential among traders and analysts who approach monetary economics through the lens of how financial institutions actually function rather than how textbook models assume they work.
