Wang Wen-Yuan

Wang Wen-Yuan leads Formosa Plastics Group, one of Taiwan's most important industrial conglomerates. The group was founded by Wang Yung-ching, often called the "God of Business Management" in Taiwan, who built a PVC manufacturing company into a sprawling petrochemical empire. The publicly listed entities include Formosa Plastics Corporation (PVC, polyethylene, polypropylene — Taiwan's largest plastics producer), Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corporation (PTA, polyester fiber, carbon fiber), and Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (Taiwan's largest oil refiner and ethylene producer, operating a massive integrated refinery and olefins complex at Mailiao). The Mailiao complex is one of the largest integrated petrochemical facilities in the world, with refining capacity of approximately 540,000 barrels per day and substantial ethylene cracking capacity. This vertical integration — from crude oil refining through ethylene cracking to downstream plastics production — provides cost advantages and supply security that standalone operators cannot match. The Formosa group companies face structural challenges: environmental opposition in Taiwan has effectively blocked capacity expansion, Chinese overcapacity in basic petrochemicals has increased competition, and the energy transition raises long-term questions about fossil fuel-derived plastics demand.
