Zero-commission trading, retail investor democratization, GameStop controversy, payment for order flow

Vlad Tenev co-founded Robinhood in 2013 with Baiju Bhatt. Robinhood pioneered zero-commission stock trading and fractional shares, attracting millions of first-time investors. The platform became central to the 2021 meme stock phenomenon when it controversially restricted trading in GameStop and other stocks during the short squeeze. Tenev testified before Congress about the restrictions and payment for order flow business model. Despite controversy, Robinhood went public in 2021, symbolizing the retail trading revolution it helped spark. Under Tenev's continued leadership post-IPO, Robinhood has expanded into cryptocurrency trading, retirement accounts, and international markets, while working to expand its revenue model beyond payment for order flow through premium subscription services and cash management products.
