Victor Niederhoffer
Statistical market analysis, speculative trading philosophy, markets and life philosophy, Chicago Board of Trade futures trading, George Soros connection
Victor Niederhoffer is one of the most fascinating and controversial figures in speculative trading. A Harvard-educated statistician and former world class squash player, he became a successful speculative trader in futures and options markets during the 1970s-1990s. He worked with George Soros early in his career. His 1997 book "The Education of a Speculator" combined autobiographical narrative with philosophical and statistical analysis of markets, becoming a cult classic in trading circles. However, his career was punctuated by spectacular blowups — losing his fund twice, once in 1997 during the Asian financial crisis and again in 2007. Despite these catastrophes, he has repeatedly rebuilt and continued trading and writing. His intellectual eclecticism — drawing equally on statistics, evolutionary biology, musical theory, and squash strategy to understand market dynamics — gave his market commentary a distinctiveness that attracted devoted followers who valued unconventional analytical perspectives.
