Victor Niederhoffer

Founder · NCZ Commodity Management

Applied statistical science to commodity speculation; mentored George Soros for a period; wrote The Education of a Speculator (1997) and Practical Speculation (2003); 5-time world squash champion.

Victor Niederhoffer studied statistics and economics at Harvard, where he developed his belief that financial markets could be studied scientifically using statistical methods. He pursued a career as a commodities trader and speculator, applying quantitative and statistical analysis to identify patterns and anomalies in price data. He is also a five-time world squash champion, demonstrating the same competitiveness and analytical approach that characterised his trading. Niederhoffer mentored George Soros for a period and was associated with Commodities Corporation. He wrote "The Education of a Speculator" (1997), an autobiographical account of his experiences in markets that blended financial theory, personal history, and market philosophy. The book became a classic of speculative trading literature for its candour and originality. His fund suffered catastrophic losses in 1997 during the Asian financial crisis — an episode Niederhoffer discusses with unusual transparency. He rebuilt his trading operation and wrote "Practical Speculation" (2003) with Laurel Kenner. His approach to markets — statistical, scientific, and highly personal — represents an early form of quantitative trading combined with deep empirical research. He remains an active writer on market theory and speculation through his website Daily Speculations.
