Victor Dodig

President & CEO of CIBC · CIBC

global

Victor Dodig has served as President and CEO of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) since 2014, leading the fifth-largest Canadian bank through a strategic transformation. When Dodig took over, CIBC was seen as the weakest of the Big Five Canadian banks — overly dependent on the domestic mortgage market and lacking the international diversification of peers like Royal Bank and TD Bank. Dodig's defining strategic move was the $5 billion acquisition of PrivateBancorp (now CIBC Bank USA) in 2017, giving CIBC a meaningful commercial banking platform in the U.S. Midwest and establishing a cross-border banking capability that none of the smaller Canadian banks possessed. He also grew CIBC's wealth management business significantly, both in Canada and internationally, and invested heavily in digital banking capabilities. Under Dodig's leadership, CIBC has improved its return on equity, diversified its revenue mix, and grown earnings per share at a competitive rate versus peers. His decisions on U.S. banking growth pace, Canadian mortgage book management amid housing market sensitivity, wealth management expansion, technology investment, and capital allocation between dividends, buybacks, and growth investments are the primary drivers of CIBC's stock.
