Author and Educator · Van Tharp Institute

Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom (1998) — core text on position sizing and expectancy; Van Tharp Institute trains thousands; featured in Market Wizards as the researcher who studied top traders.

Van Tharp holds a PhD in psychology from Louisiana State University and applied his psychological training to understanding what separates successful traders from unsuccessful ones. He was featured in Jack Schwager's original "Market Wizards" (1989) as a researcher who had studied the psychological profiles and trading approaches of top traders. His landmark book "Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom" (1998) introduced the concept of system quality number (SQN) and emphasised position sizing as the primary determinant of long-term trading outcomes. Tharp's central argument is that most traders focus excessively on market prediction — trying to identify the right entries and exits — while neglecting the mathematical reality that a system with positive expectancy (average win * win rate - average loss * loss rate > 0) and proper position sizing will be profitable over time, regardless of individual trade outcomes. Position sizing determines how much of account equity to risk on each trade, and Tharp demonstrates mathematically that it is the single most important variable determining long-term account growth. He founded the Van Tharp Institute to teach these concepts through workshops and online courses. His research has influenced countless systematic traders.
