Todd Combs

Investment Manager · Berkshire Hathaway

Manages $15B+ portion of Berkshire equity portfolio; CEO of GEICO; former Castle Point Capital hedge fund founder; joined Berkshire 2010; early Tesla investor at Berkshire.

Todd Combs studied economics at Florida State University and earned his MBA from Columbia Business School — where he was influenced by Bruce Greenwald's value investing curriculum. He founded Castle Point Capital, a hedge fund, and built a successful track record that attracted attention from Warren Buffett. Buffett hired Combs in 2010 as an investment manager at Berkshire Hathaway, tasked with managing a portion of the company's massive equity portfolio. This hire signalled Buffett's thinking about long-term succession: alongside Ted Weschler (hired in 2012), Combs is one of the two individuals most likely to manage Berkshire's equity portfolio after Buffett. Combs manages approximately $15 billion of Berkshire's portfolio, and he has been associated with several notable investments including the purchase of StoneCo and Apple (though the core Apple investment is attributed to Buffett). He was also named CEO of GEICO, one of Berkshire's largest insurance subsidiaries, in 2020. Combs is known for his intellectual depth, his admiration for Buffett's investment framework, and his ability to think through complex business situations with a long-term perspective.
