Turned the struggling German telecom into Europe's most valuable telco — primarily through the T-Mobile US success story that conquered the American wireless market

Tim Höttges has served as CEO of Deutsche Telekom since 2014, presiding over one of the most successful value creation stories in European telecommunications. Deutsche Telekom is Europe's largest telecoms group by revenue, but the majority of its market value derives from its majority stake in T-Mobile US — the Un-carrier that disrupted the American wireless market. Under Höttges' strategic oversight, T-Mobile US (led operationally by Mike Sievert) acquired Sprint in 2020, creating America's second-largest wireless carrier. T-Mobile has consistently outgrown competitors AT&T and Verizon in subscriber additions, leveraging its superior 5G network (built on mid-band spectrum acquired through Sprint) and aggressive marketing. Deutsche Telekom's European operations span Germany (broadband, mobile, fixed-line), and numerous other European countries through subsidiaries. The European business generates stable but lower-growth returns compared to the dynamic T-Mobile US story. Höttges has been investing heavily in European fiber broadband deployment, 5G rollout, and B2B digital services. Key stock drivers include T-Mobile US subscriber growth and ARPU, Deutsche Telekom's stake value in T-Mobile US, European broadband competition, 5G network investment returns, German regulatory environment, and potential further consolidation of T-Mobile US ownership.
