Tim Buckley
Passive investing industry, index fund cost reduction, fee compression across the industry, retail investor advocacy, mutual fund ownership structure
Tim Buckley became CEO of Vanguard in 2018, taking over from William McNabb. He had spent most of his career at Vanguard after a brief stint at Goldman Sachs. Buckley inherited an organization founded by John Bogle on the principle that ordinary investors deserve low-cost access to diversified investments, and has continued this mission. Vanguard's unique mutual ownership structure — owned by its funds, which are owned by investors — means it has no external shareholders demanding profits, enabling it to continuously reduce costs. Under Buckley, Vanguard expanded its international presence, developed new advice models, and extended its range of ESG-related products, while continuing to pressure the broader industry to lower fees. Vanguard manages over $8 trillion in assets. His continued commitment to Bogle's founding philosophy has ensured that Vanguard remains the benchmark for low-cost investing.
