Tom Steyer
Absolute return investing, merger arbitrage, emerging market debt, real assets, climate finance advocacy, California Democratic politics
Tom Steyer founded Farallon Capital Management in 1986 after working at Goldman Sachs, building it into one of the most successful absolute return hedge funds in the US with a diversified strategy spanning merger arbitrage, real assets, distressed debt, and emerging market investments. Farallon became particularly known for its ability to deliver consistent returns regardless of market conditions. Steyer stepped back from Farallon in 2012 to focus on climate change advocacy, founding NextGen America and becoming one of the largest political donors in US history. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020. His transition from hedge fund billionaire to climate activist represents one of the more dramatic career pivots in American finance. Farallon's enduring success after his departure demonstrated the institutional depth he had built during his tenure at the firm.
