Sunil Bharti Mittal

Sunil Bharti Mittal is the founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises and its flagship Bharti Airtel, India's largest private telecommunications company. Born in 1957 in Ludhiana, Punjab, Mittal started as a small-scale entrepreneur importing bicycle parts and push-button telephones before launching Airtel in 1995 when India auctioned its first mobile telecom licenses. Mittal's greatest innovation was the "minutes factory" model — outsourcing network infrastructure to Ericsson and IT operations to IBM, allowing Airtel to focus on marketing and customer acquisition with minimal capital expenditure. This asset-light approach let Airtel offer mobile services at a fraction of global prices and scale rapidly across India. Mittal also executed one of the largest telecom M&A deals in history by acquiring Zain Africa's operations in 2010 for $10.7 billion, extending Airtel's footprint to 14 African countries.
