Sunil Bharti Mittal is the founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises and its flagship Bharti Airtel, India's largest private telecommunications company. Born in 1957 in Ludhiana, Punjab, Mittal started as a small-scale entrepreneur importing bicycle parts and push-button telephones before launching Airtel in 1995 when India auctioned its first mobile telecom licenses. Mittal's greatest innovation was the "minutes factory" model — outsourcing network infrastructure to Ericsson and IT operations to IBM, allowing Airtel to focus on marketing and customer acquisition with minimal capital expenditure. This asset-light approach let Airtel offer mobile services at a fraction of global prices and scale rapidly across India. Mittal also executed one of the largest telecom M&A deals in history by acquiring Zain Africa's operations in 2010 for $10.7 billion, extending Airtel's footprint to 14 African countries. The defining test of Mittal's career came in September 2016, when Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio launched with free 4G service for all, triggering a price war that destroyed weaker operators (Vodafone India and Idea were forced into a defensive merger, and several smaller operators went bankrupt). Mittal navigated this existential crisis by investing heavily in 4G network quality, focusing on premium postpaid subscribers, and raising tariffs once the market consolidated to a three-player structure. By 2024, Airtel's ARPU (average revenue per user) was the highest in the Indian market. Mittal's decisions on 5G capital allocation, Africa expansion pace (where Airtel Africa is separately listed), enterprise and B2B digital services growth, tariff increases in the Indian market, and spectrum acquisition strategy are the primary drivers of Bharti Airtel's stock. His ability to build a world-class telecom business in one of the most price-sensitive and competitive markets globally has made him one of India's most respected business leaders.
