Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber

CEO of ADNOC Group · ADNOC

global

Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber is the CEO and Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), one of the world's largest and most important oil and gas producers. Appointed in 2016, Al Jaber has led a radical transformation of ADNOC from a relatively insular state oil company into an aggressive, globally-oriented integrated energy major. He orchestrated the IPOs of ADNOC Distribution (fuel retail), ADNOC Gas (gas processing), and ADNOC Drilling, unlocking shareholder value and bringing transparency to previously opaque state operations. Al Jaber's dual role as ADNOC CEO and President of COP28 (the 2023 UN climate conference held in Dubai) made him one of the most scrutinized figures in global energy. Critics argued it was a conflict of interest; supporters noted that real energy transition requires engaging the largest producers. Under his leadership, ADNOC committed to investing $15 billion in low-carbon solutions while simultaneously expanding oil production capacity to 5 million barrels per day, reflecting the UAE's "and, not or" energy strategy. His decisions on ADNOC's production targets, international expansion (including the attempted acquisition of Covestro and stake in various petrochemical assets), downstream integration through the Ruwais mega-refinery expansion, and the pace of listing additional ADNOC subsidiaries are the primary catalysts for ADNOC Distribution and ADNOC Gas share prices. Both listed entities benefit from ADNOC's strategic direction, long-term supply agreements, and the UAE's stable regulatory environment.
