Candlestick charting, technical analysis, Western adoption of Japanese methods

Steve Nison introduced Japanese candlestick charting to Western markets through his 1991 book "Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques", which remains the standard reference on the subject. He learned the method from Japanese brokers while working at Merrill Lynch and recognized its potential for Western technical analysts. Candlestick patterns — doji, hammer, engulfing, shooting star, and others — became foundational tools in technical analysis curricula worldwide. Nison's book has been translated into over a dozen languages and candlestick charting is now the dominant bar-type in most trading platforms. His role as the bridge between a centuries-old Japanese rice trading analytical tradition and modern Western financial markets represents one of the most successful intellectual transfers in the history of market analysis, fundamentally changing how price action is visually represented and interpreted by traders globally.
