Steemit Inc.

As the organization that launched and commercially supported the Steem platform, the company held both technical stewardship and financial levers. Corporate token allocations funded development, governance bounties, and promotional activities and therefore represented a concentrated economic resource that could be mobilized in on-chain votes. The institution's codebase stewardship meant it could push or withhold upgrades, manage accounts tied to the company, and act as an interlocutor with exchanges and partners. When corporate control changed hands, those levers were perceived as potentially subject to different priorities, prompting debates about custodial responsibility, upgrade control, and the legitimacy of using corporate-held stake for governance actions. The company's historical role thus forced Hive's founders to make immediate choices about state (chain) continuity, genesis parameters, and the treatment of previously assigned allocations—choices that shaped initial token distribution, witness selection, and social contracts for the new network. The institutional memory and artifacts left by the company (code forks, documentation, and allocation records) also materially eased the technical execution of the fork while simultaneously embedding a political narrative that influenced early community cohesion and resource allocation on Hive.
