S.N. Subrahmanyan

Chairman & Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro · Larsen & Toubro

S.N. Subrahmanyan (commonly known as SNS) is the Chairman and Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro Limited, India's largest engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) conglomerate. A civil engineer by training who joined L&T in 1984, SNS rose through the construction division — the company's core business — to become CEO in 2017 and Chairman in October 2023, succeeding the legendary A.M. Naik who had led L&T's transformation for over two decades. L&T under SNS is the most diversified infrastructure company in India: it builds highways, metro systems, nuclear power plants, and smart cities; manufactures defense equipment (including work on India's nuclear submarine program and advanced weapons systems); operates one of India's largest IT services companies (LTIMindtree, formed through the 2022 merger of L&T Infotech and Mindtree); and runs financial services and real estate businesses. With an order book exceeding $70 billion, L&T's performance is often viewed as a direct proxy for India's economic health. SNS's leadership faces a pivotal macro tailwind: India's multi-year infrastructure investment supercycle driven by government spending on roads, railways, defense modernization, smart cities, and green energy transition. The Modi government's infrastructure push has made L&T one of the primary beneficiaries, with order inflows consistently growing in double digits. SNS must balance execution on this massive opportunity while managing the working capital intensity inherent in large infrastructure projects. SNS's key decisions include project execution efficiency (L&T's margins are thin by industrial standards and every percentage point matters), capital allocation between organic growth and acquisitions, the LTIMindtree strategy (software vs. construction company valuation), international order diversification (particularly in the Middle East), and the green energy transition (L&T has a growing green hydrogen and electrolysis business). His workaholic leadership style — he made headlines in early 2025 for suggesting employees work 90 hours a week — reflects the intense operational demands of managing India's engineering backbone.
