Nikolaus von Bomhard
Global reinsurance market, catastrophe risk pricing, climate change insurance implications, natural disaster risk modeling
Nikolaus von Bomhard served as CEO of Munich Re from 2004 to 2016, leading the world's largest reinsurance company through multiple major natural catastrophe events including Hurricane Katrina (2005), the Japanese earthquake and tsunami (2011), and the 2012 Superstorm Sandy. Munich Re under his leadership was a pioneer in analyzing and quantifying climate-related risks, publishing regular research on the increasing frequency and severity of weather-related natural disasters. The company's climate risk work helped shape how the insurance industry thought about climate change as both an existential risk and a business opportunity for risk transfer and resilience building. Von Bomhard also developed Munich Re's primary insurance operations through ERGO and its technology-driven insurance initiatives, broadening the group's revenue base beyond traditional reinsurance as low interest rates pressured investment returns across the industry.
