Siddhartha Lal is the Managing Director and CEO of Eicher Motors Limited, and the architect of one of the most remarkable brand turnarounds in automotive history. The grandson of Eicher Group's founder, Lal took charge of Royal Enfield in 2000 when the iconic British motorcycle brand — owned by Eicher since 1994 — was selling barely 25,000 motorcycles annually and was on the verge of shutdown. Lal's strategy was counter-intuitive: rather than chasing volume in India's price-sensitive motorcycle market, he positioned Royal Enfield as an aspirational lifestyle brand in the 250-650cc "mid-segment" — a category that barely existed in India at the time. He invested in product quality, opened modern showrooms, cultivated a community of riders, and created events like the Himalayan Odyssey that built cult-like brand loyalty. The Classic 350, launched in 2009, became a phenomenon — a retro-styled motorcycle that captured India's growing middle class. By 2025, Royal Enfield was selling approximately 900,000 motorcycles per year in India and had expanded into 60+ international markets, with particular success in Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Lal's key strategic decisions include the pace of international expansion, new model launches in the 450cc and above segments, manufacturing capacity additions, and premium pricing protection in an Indian market that remains highly price-sensitive. The Eicher-Volvo commercial vehicle joint venture (VECV) is the other arm of the business. Royal Enfield's growth trajectory and margin sustainability are the dominant drivers of Eicher Motors' stock.
