Shuntaro Furukawa
global
Shuntaro Furukawa became President of Nintendo in June 2018, succeeding the late Tatsumi Kimishima who had served as an interim leader after the death of beloved CEO Satoru Iwata in 2015. Furukawa, a career Nintendo employee who joined in 1994, rose through the company's corporate planning and business development divisions — notably, he is not a game developer, which distinguishes him from some of Nintendo's most famous leaders. Nintendo under Furukawa has enjoyed its most commercially successful period since the original Wii era. The Nintendo Switch, launched in 2017, has sold over 140 million units worldwide, placing it among the top five best-selling game consoles in history alongside the PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, Game Boy, and PlayStation 4. The Switch's hybrid design — functioning as both a home console connected to a TV and a portable handheld device — created a new category that competitors have struggled to replicate. Furukawa's most significant strategic contribution has been expanding Nintendo's business model beyond the traditional "sell hardware, sell software" cycle. Under his leadership, Nintendo has moved aggressively into entertainment and IP monetization. The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing animated films ever. Super Nintendo World theme park areas have opened at Universal Studios parks in Japan, Hollywood, and Orlando. Nintendo has also expanded its mobile gaming presence and merchandising operations, creating more consistent revenue streams that are less dependent on hardware cycle timing. The critical near-term challenge is the transition to Switch 2, Nintendo's next-generation console announced for 2025. Console transitions are historically treacherous for gaming companies — Nintendo itself experienced a disastrous transition from the Wii to the Wii U, which sold only 13.5 million units compared to the Wii's 101 million. Furukawa must execute a smooth transition that retains the enormous Switch installed base while offering enough innovation to justify an upgrade. The stakes are enormous: a successful Switch 2 launch could extend Nintendo's current golden era, while a stumble could revive the boom-bust cycle that has characterized much of Nintendo's history.
