Seth Alexander

MIT Endowment CIO · MIT Investment Management Company

University endowment management, alternative investment allocation, venture capital and PE access, institutional investor model portfolios

Seth Alexander has been President of MIT Investment Management Company (MITIMCo) since 2004, overseeing the investment of MIT's endowment. MITIMCo manages over $27 billion in endowment assets using a diversified approach that emphasizes alternative investments including private equity, venture capital, real estate, and hedge funds. Like the Yale endowment model pioneered by David Swensen, MITIMCo allocates heavily to illiquid alternatives on the premise that a perpetual institution with long investment horizon can earn illiquidity premiums unavailable to shorter-horizon investors. MIT's endowment has been one of the better-performing large university endowments in the US, generating returns that have significantly outpaced public market benchmarks over long periods. Alexander's close relationships with MIT's faculty and research community have given MITIMCo privileged access to venture and deep technology investment opportunities directly linked to MIT's research activities.
