Sergio Ermotti
Swiss banking system, UBS strategy, wealth management globally, Credit Suisse integration, systemic banking risk in Europe
Sergio Ermotti, a Swiss-Italian banker, served as CEO of UBS from 2011 to 2020, successfully repositioning the bank after its near-collapse during the 2008 financial crisis, scaling back investment banking and focusing on wealth management. After stepping down in 2020, he took on the chairmanship of Swiss Re, the reinsurance giant. In 2023, he was unexpectedly recalled to lead UBS again, this time as CEO tasked with managing the integration of Credit Suisse following UBS's emergency acquisition. The integration involved merging two major global banks, resolving thousands of conflicting roles, managing hundreds of billions in legacy assets from Credit Suisse, and navigating complex regulatory requirements in multiple jurisdictions. Ermotti's prior experience restructuring UBS made him the obvious choice for this unprecedented task.
