Built Chainlink, the dominant oracle network connecting $75B+ in DeFi value to real-world data across hundreds of blockchains
Sergey Nazarov is the co-founder of Chainlink, the decentralized oracle network that became the critical infrastructure layer connecting blockchains to off-chain data, events, and computation. Without oracles, smart contracts are blind — Nazarov recognized this problem early and devoted over a decade to solving it. Nazarov studied philosophy and business at New York University. His path to crypto began with SmartContract.com, founded in 2014, which explored how external data could trigger blockchain-based agreements. The Chainlink whitepaper, co-authored with Steve Ellis in 2017, laid out a framework for decentralized oracle networks with cryptographic guarantees of data integrity. Chainlink launched its mainnet in 2019 and rapidly became the industry standard for price feeds, powering the vast majority of DeFi protocols including Aave, Synthetix, and Compound. The network expanded beyond price data to include verifiable randomness (VRF), cross-chain interoperability (CCIP), and automation services. By 2024, Chainlink had secured hundreds of billions of dollars in transaction value across over 1,800 integrations. Nazarov is known for his patient, infrastructure-first approach — building foundational technology rather than chasing hype cycles. His conviction that smart contracts need reliable external data has been validated by the growth of DeFi, insurance, gaming, and enterprise blockchain adoption, all of which depend on the oracle problem Chainlink solves.
