David Swensen

Yale Endowment CIO & Endowment Investing Pioneer · Yale University Investment Office

University endowment investing model, alternative asset allocation, private equity and venture access, institutional investing revolution, Yale endowment performance

David Swensen became Chief Investment Officer of Yale's endowment in 1985 when it had approximately $1 billion. Over 36 years until his death in May 2021, he grew it to over $40 billion — one of the greatest institutional investment track records in history. His most important contribution was the "Yale Model" (also called the Endowment Model): dramatically reducing allocations to US equities and bonds, and instead allocating heavily to private equity, venture capital, real assets, hedge funds, and international equities. This model generated superior long-term returns compared to conventional portfolios and was widely adopted by other endowments and institutional investors. He wrote "Pioneering Portfolio Management" and "Unconventional Success" documenting his approach. Swensen's willingness to share his investment philosophy and mentor other endowment managers is perhaps as important as his investment returns — his generosity of knowledge shaped how trillions of institutional dollars are managed around the world.
