Scott Bessent

US Secretary of the Treasury · US Department of the Treasury

Soros Fund Management CIO (2011-2015); founded Key Square Group (2016); US Treasury Secretary since January 2025; global macro expertise in currencies and rates; first openly gay Treasury Secretary.

Scott Bessent studied economics at Yale University and spent 20 years at Soros Fund Management, eventually becoming Chief Investment Officer from 2011 to 2015. During his time at Soros he managed the firm's global macro portfolio, focusing particularly on currencies, rates, and cross-asset macro strategies. He co-founded Key Square Group in 2016, a global macro hedge fund. In November 2024 President-elect Donald Trump nominated Bessent as US Treasury Secretary — a surprising pick given Bessent's background working for George Soros, one of Trump's most prominent critics. Bessent was confirmed by the Senate and took office as Treasury Secretary in January 2025. He became the first openly gay person to serve as US Treasury Secretary. His economic views are defined by what he calls the '3-3-3 plan': reducing the budget deficit to 3% of GDP, achieving 3% GDP growth, and increasing energy production by 3 million barrels per day. Bessent is known for his macro perspective on currency markets, dollar policy, and trade — bringing a global macro trader's framework to bear on the Treasury's role in international economic policy.
