global
Sanjay Mehrotra became president and CEO of Micron Technology in 2017, bringing deep memory industry experience as co-founder of SanDisk. Micron is the only US-headquartered manufacturer of DRAM and NAND flash memory — the two semiconductor memory technologies that store data in virtually every computing device from smartphones to data center servers. The company competes in a concentrated oligopoly with Samsung and SK Hynix. The AI revolution has transformed Micron's growth outlook. High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) — specialized DRAM stacks that provide the massive memory bandwidth required by AI accelerators like NVIDIA's H100 and B200 GPUs — has become the hottest product in the semiconductor industry. Micron's HBM3E products are in extreme demand, and the company has sold out its HBM capacity through 2025. Beyond HBM, every AI data center requires vast amounts of standard DDR5 DRAM and high-density NAND SSDs for inference and storage workloads. Mehrotra's execution on HBM capacity ramp, technology competitiveness against Samsung and SK Hynix, and management of the memory cycle (historically among the most volatile in semiconductors) are the primary drivers of Micron's stock.
