Ralph Acampora
Technical analysis legitimization, chart pattern analysis, institutional adoption of technical research, CMT certification program
Ralph Acampora is one of the best-known technical analysts on Wall Street, having spent decades at major financial institutions including Kidder Peabody, Prudential Securities, and others. He co-founded the Market Technicians Association (MTA, now the CMT Association), which developed the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) certification program, helping to professionalize and legitimize technical analysis as an institutional research discipline. He was known for his market calls during major bull and bear markets and for advocating for technical analysis as complementary to fundamental research. His work helped move technical analysis from a fringe practice to a recognized analytical approach within institutional finance. His teaching and mentorship influenced a generation of technical analysts who went on to apply these methods across equity, fixed income, commodity, and currency markets at major institutions.
