Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello

Chairman of Cosan · Cosan

Built Brazil's most diversified energy and infrastructure conglomerate from sugarcane ethanol, controlling Raízen, Rumo, and Compass Gas

Rubens Ometto Silveira Mello is the founder and Chairman of Cosan, one of Brazil's most influential conglomerates spanning energy, logistics, infrastructure, and agriculture. Ometto built Cosan from a sugarcane business into a diversified group that touches multiple critical sectors of the Brazilian economy. Cosan's portfolio includes: Raízen (a 50/50 joint venture with Shell that is the world's largest producer of sugarcane ethanol and sugar, and one of Brazil's largest fuel distributors with thousands of Shell-branded gas stations), Rumo (Brazil's largest independent railway operator, transporting agricultural commodities — soybeans, corn, sugar — from the interior to export ports), Compass (natural gas distribution through Comgás, São Paulo state's gas utility), and Moove (one of the largest lubricant producers in South America). Ometto also took a controversial 5% stake in mining giant Vale. Cosan represents a leveraged bet on Brazil's agricultural and infrastructure development. Key stock drivers include sugar and ethanol prices, Brazilian agricultural production and exports, Rumo railway volume and tariffs, natural gas distribution growth, Brazilian interest rates (Cosan carries significant debt), the real exchange rate, government biofuel policy, and the Vale stake performance.
