Ron Vachris

CEO of Costco · Costco

global

Ron Vachris became CEO of Costco Wholesale in January 2024, succeeding Craig Jelinek who had led the company since 2012. Vachris is the quintessential Costco leader — he joined the company in 1982 as a forklift driver in one of the original Price Club warehouses and worked his way up through every level of operations over 42 years. Costco's business model is unique in retail: the company generates the majority of its profit from membership fees rather than product margins. With over 130 million cardholders paying $65-130 annually, and a renewal rate above 90%, Costco has one of the most predictable and defensible revenue streams in all of retail. The stores deliberately keep product margins razor-thin (typically below 15%) to drive traffic and membership renewals. Vachris inherits a company trading at a significant premium to the retail sector — typically 40-50x earnings, compared to 15-25x for peers. This premium reflects Costco's exceptional execution consistency, customer loyalty, and growth potential as it continues opening new warehouses domestically and internationally. The Kirkland Signature private label brand alone would rank among the largest consumer products companies in the world. The challenges ahead include managing the first membership fee increase in years (announced 2024), continuing international expansion particularly in China, and sustaining the treasure-hunt merchandising culture that makes Costco shopping an experience rather than a chore. Vachris must also navigate e-commerce growth — an area where Costco has intentionally been more deliberate than competitors, protecting the in-warehouse experience that drives membership value.
