Robin Li

Co-founder, Chairman & CEO of Baidu · Baidu

global

Robin Li (Li Yanhong) co-founded Baidu in 2000 in a Beijing hotel room after returning from the United States, where he had worked at Dow Jones and Infoseek. He holds a patent on the "Rankdex" hyperlink analysis algorithm — a concept foundational to modern search engines that predated Google's PageRank patent. Under his leadership, Baidu grew into China's undisputed search leader with over 70% domestic market share, becoming one of the first Chinese tech companies to list on NASDAQ in 2005. Li's most consequential strategic decision came in 2017 when he declared "Baidu is no longer an internet company — Baidu is an AI company." He redirected billions in R&D toward artificial intelligence, launching the Apollo autonomous driving platform (now one of the world's largest robo-taxi operations with licenses in multiple Chinese cities), the ERNIE large language model (China's answer to ChatGPT), and Baidu AI Cloud. This pivot was initially met with skepticism as Baidu lost ground in mobile and social media to ByteDance and Tencent. By 2024–2025, the AI bet began paying off: ERNIE attracted hundreds of millions of users, Apollo's robo-taxi fleet expanded to commercial operations in Wuhan, Beijing, and other cities, and Baidu's AI Cloud became a top-three provider in China. Li personally drove the technical vision, regularly publishing AI research and speaking at international conferences. His willingness to sacrifice short-term advertising revenue to fund long-term AI infrastructure made him one of the most polarizing figures in Chinese tech. Li remains one of China's wealthiest individuals and the most technically-minded CEO among the BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) triumvirate. His decisions on AI investment pacing, Apollo commercialization timelines, and regulatory navigation in an increasingly complex Chinese tech environment are the primary drivers of Baidu's stock price.
