Robert Isom
global
Robert Isom became CEO of American Airlines Group in March 2022, inheriting leadership of the world's largest airline by fleet size and one of the most complex operational organizations in global transportation. American operates approximately 6,800 daily flights to nearly 350 destinations worldwide through its mainline and regional network, with major hubs at Dallas/Fort Worth, Charlotte, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington Reagan. Isom, a lifelong airline operations executive who previously served as American's President and COO, took charge of an airline carrying the heaviest debt load among US carriers — approximately $35 billion accumulated through pre-pandemic acquisitions, the US Airways merger, and pandemic-era survival borrowing. His primary strategic focus has been deleveraging the balance sheet while investing in the customer experience to retain profitable business and premium leisure travelers. His key decisions involve debt reduction pace, fleet renewal strategy, revenue management optimization, loyalty program monetization (the AAdvantage program is one of the industry's most valuable assets), labor relations with pilots and flight attendants, and competitive positioning against Delta (which targets premium travelers) and United (which has invested heavily in international routes). American's stock is the most leveraged bet on US air travel demand among the Big Three carriers.
