RJ Scaringe

Founder & CEO of Rivian Automotive · Rivian Automotive

global

RJ Scaringe founded Rivian Automotive in 2009 while still in his twenties, with a vision of building electric adventure vehicles that could compete with the best internal combustion trucks and SUVs. An MIT mechanical engineering PhD, Scaringe spent a decade developing Rivian's technology before revealing the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV in 2018, which stunned the auto industry with their design, capability, and technology. Rivian secured a massive strategic partnership with Amazon, which ordered 100,000 custom Electric Delivery Vans (EDVs) and invested in the company. Amazon's backing provided crucial validation and guaranteed demand. Rivian went public in November 2021 at a valuation exceeding $100 billion — one of the largest IPOs in U.S. history — before the stock declined significantly as EV market realities set in. Scaringe's central challenge is achieving profitability: Rivian loses tens of thousands of dollars on each vehicle produced, as its Normal, Illinois factory has not yet reached the scale needed for cost efficiency. The upcoming R2 platform — a smaller, more affordable SUV — is designed to be the volume product that brings Rivian to profitability, with production planned at a new factory in Georgia. A $5 billion investment from Volkswagen Group (creating a joint venture for EV software architecture) provided additional capital and validation. Key stock drivers include production ramp and delivery volumes, gross margin improvement trajectory, R2 launch timing and reception, VW partnership execution, cash burn rate and capital needs, and the competitive dynamics against Tesla, Ford, GM, and Hyundai in the EV truck/SUV market.
