Rich Kruger

President & CEO of Suncor Energy · Suncor Energy

Operates Canada's largest integrated oil company — oil sands mining, upgrading, refining, and Petro-Canada retail stations serving the country's energy needs.

Rich Kruger serves as President and CEO of Suncor Energy, Canada's largest integrated oil company and the country's premier oil sands producer. Suncor produces over 700,000 barrels per day of oil equivalent from its oil sands mining and in-situ (SAGD — steam-assisted gravity drainage) operations in northern Alberta, supplemented by offshore production in Eastern Canada and the North Sea. Suncor's integrated model spans the full petroleum value chain: upstream (oil sands mining at the massive Millennium and North Steepbank mines, in-situ operations at Fort Hills and Firebag), midstream (upgrading bitumen into synthetic crude oil), downstream (four refineries in Canada that process Suncor's own production), and retail (the Petro-Canada brand — Canada's largest gas station and convenience store network with 1,500+ locations). Kruger (formerly CEO of Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil Canada) was brought in to improve Suncor's operational reliability and safety record, which had suffered from a series of incidents. The turnaround has focused on operational discipline, reducing unplanned downtime, and improving safety culture. Key stock drivers include oil prices (WTI and WCS differential), oil sands production reliability, operating cost reduction, refining margins, Petro-Canada retail performance, capital allocation (buybacks and dividends), and the long-term trajectory of Canadian oil sands in the energy transition.
