Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was born in Mumbai in 1960 into a family with connections to the Bombay Stock Exchange. He started trading with Rs 5,000 borrowed from his brother in 1985 and gradually built a concentrated portfolio of Indian equities. His most famous investment was Titan Company, which he held for decades and which became one of the most spectacular wealth-generating positions in Indian stock market history. Jhunjhunwala managed his portfolio through Rare Enterprises, his proprietary investment firm. He was known for his bullish long-term stance on India's economic growth story, his willingness to hold through volatility, and his combination of value investing principles with trading instincts. Beyond investing, he co-founded Akasa Air, a low-cost airline, in his final years. He passed away in August 2022. His investments spanned consumer brands, financial services, healthcare, and hospitality across the Indian market.
