Pony Ma

Ma Huateng, known internationally as Pony Ma, was born in 1971 in Chaoyang, Guangdong province, China. His father was a port manager. Ma studied computer science at Shenzhen University and worked as a software engineer at China Motion Telecom and a pager company before co-founding Tencent with four classmates in November 1998 in Shenzhen. Tencent's first product was OICQ (later renamed QQ), an instant messaging client modeled after ICQ. QQ grew rapidly to dominate Chinese online communication, reaching hundreds of millions of users. When the mobile era arrived, Ma made the pivotal decision to launch WeChat (Weixin) in 2011. WeChat evolved from a simple messaging app into China's indispensable super-app — integrating payments, mini-programs, e-commerce, government services, and social media into a single platform used by over 1.3 billion people monthly. Beyond WeChat, Ma built Tencent into the world's largest gaming company by revenue. Tencent owns Riot Games (League of Legends), has major stakes in Epic Games (Fortnite), Supercell (Clash of Clans), and publishes the world's highest-grossing mobile game, Honor of Kings. The company also operates major cloud, music streaming, and video services in China, and holds a vast portfolio of investments in over 800 companies globally. Ma is known for his reserved, engineering-oriented leadership style — a sharp contrast to the flamboyant personas of other Chinese tech billionaires. He rarely gives interviews, avoids public controversy, and focuses on product quality and user experience. He has navigated complex regulatory environments, including China's 2021 tech crackdown on gaming time and antitrust enforcement, while maintaining Tencent's growth trajectory. He is one of the most influential but least visible tech leaders in the world.
