Pieter van der Does

Co-founder & CEO of Adyen · Adyen

global

Pieter van der Does co-founded Adyen in 2006 in Amsterdam with the vision of building a single technology platform that would handle the entire payments chain — from checkout to settlement — across every channel and geography. Before Adyen, he had co-founded Bibit Global Payment Services, which was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland, giving him deep insight into the inefficiencies of legacy payment processing. Adyen's core innovation is its single-platform architecture. Unlike traditional payment processors that stitch together separate systems for online, mobile, and point-of-sale transactions, Adyen built everything from scratch on one codebase. This allows merchants to get a unified view of all payments, reduces reconciliation complexity, and enables features like cross-channel analytics and tokenization that are impossible with bolted-together legacy stacks. The company went public on Euronext Amsterdam in June 2018 at €240 per share and quickly became one of Europe's most valuable tech companies, at times exceeding €60 billion in market capitalization. Its client list reads like a who's who of global commerce: Netflix, Uber, Spotify, Microsoft, McDonald's, eBay, and hundreds of other enterprise merchants. Van der Does has maintained Adyen's distinctive culture of engineering-first management, minimal hierarchy, and long-term thinking. The company famously avoids acquisitions, preferring to build everything in-house. Its financial model — generating revenue from payment processing fees while maintaining high margins through technology leverage — has made it one of the most profitable fintech companies in the world. The key challenge ahead is sustaining growth as Adyen expands deeper into financial services with embedded banking, lending, and issuing products for its platform merchants.
