Peter Vanacker
Runs one of the world's three largest polyolefin producers and a leading licensor of polyethylene and polypropylene technology, processing 100+ billion pounds of product annually
Peter Vanacker has led LyondellBasell as CEO since 2022, overseeing one of the world's largest plastics, chemicals, and refining companies. Headquartered in Houston (with significant operations in the Netherlands), LyondellBasell is one of the "Big Three" global polyolefin producers (alongside Dow and ExxonMobil Chemical), producing polyethylene and polypropylene — the two most widely used plastics in the world — used in everything from food packaging and consumer products to automotive parts and medical devices. LyondellBasell's competitive advantages include its massive scale, proprietary production technology (the company licenses its polyolefin production processes to other companies, generating high-margin royalty income), and access to cheap U.S. ethane feedstock from shale gas (providing a significant cost advantage over naphtha-based European and Asian producers). The company operates through multiple segments: Olefins & Polyolefins Americas, Olefins & Polyolefins Europe/Asia/International, Intermediates & Derivatives, Advanced Polymer Solutions, and a Houston oil refinery. Vanacker has announced plans to exit the refining business (selling the Houston refinery) and focus the company on its core chemicals and polymer operations. He has also invested in mechanical and advanced (chemical) plastics recycling to address growing environmental concerns about plastic waste. Key stock drivers include polyethylene and polypropylene prices and spreads, ethane-naphtha cost advantage, global polymer demand, Chinese capacity additions, recycling technology progress, refinery exit execution, and overall global economic activity.
