Peter Brown

Co-CEO · Renaissance Technologies

Led Medallion Fund operations as co-CEO after Simons; pioneered hidden Markov models for speech recognition at IBM before joining Renaissance.

Peter Brown joined Renaissance Technologies in 1993 after a distinguished career at IBM Research, where he was a pioneer in applying hidden Markov models to speech recognition — work that laid foundational groundwork for modern natural language processing. At Renaissance he teamed with Robert Mercer, his former IBM colleague, and together they became the principal architects of the Medallion Fund's equity trading strategies. Brown was named co-CEO alongside Mercer in 2010 when Jim Simons retired from day-to-day management, and became sole CEO after Mercer stepped back in 2017. Under his leadership Renaissance has maintained the Medallion Fund's extraordinary performance record — an annualised return estimated at over 60% before fees since 1988. Brown represents a generation of Renaissance leaders who came from computer science and computational linguistics rather than traditional finance, embodying the firm's core principle that markets can be decoded mathematically. He has maintained the firm's famously secretive culture, never publishing trading research and rarely speaking publicly. Renaissance under Brown has also expanded its Institutional Equities Fund, though that vehicle has had a more mixed performance history compared to the employee-only Medallion.
