Peter Briger

Peter Briger co-founded Fortress Investment Group with Wes Edens in 1998 after a career at Goldman Sachs focused on distressed debt and special situations. He is responsible for Fortress's credit and real assets businesses, which include distressed debt, real estate credit, and loan portfolio acquisitions. Briger is known for his ability to source and price complex, illiquid credit situations — including bank loan portfolios, bankruptcy claims, and real estate assets in stress. The credit business he built became a model for the institutional alternative credit segment. Under his leadership, the Fortress credit platform expanded into direct lending and specialty finance, reflecting the broader shift in credit markets as regulatory constraints on bank balance sheets created persistent demand for non-bank lenders willing to provide capital in situations that traditional banks could no longer serve.
