Investment Manager & Author · Peter L. Bernstein Inc.

Risk history, financial theory history, investment philosophy, capital markets history

Peter Bernstein ran his own investment counsel firm for decades while writing some of the most influential books in financial history. "Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk" (1996) traced the evolution of probability theory and risk management from ancient times to modern derivatives. "Capital Ideas" (1992) documented the development of modern portfolio theory through interviews with its creators including Markowitz, Sharpe, and Fama. Bernstein also founded the Journal of Portfolio Management. He passed away in 2009, leaving a legacy as one of the most important connectors between academic finance and investment practice. His ability to synthesize decades of academic research into readable narratives made foundational concepts in portfolio theory, derivatives pricing, and risk measurement accessible to a broad audience of practitioners who would not otherwise have engaged with the primary literature.
