Against the Gods (1996) sold 500,000+ copies; Capital Ideas (1992) documented the intellectual history of modern portfolio theory; Economics & Portfolio Strategy newsletter; lifelong bridge between academia and investment practice.
Peter Bernstein had a distinguished career as an investment manager at Bernstein-Macaulay before becoming a consultant and writer. He founded Peter L. Bernstein Inc. in 1973 and published the Economics & Portfolio Strategy newsletter for decades, reaching an institutional investor audience. His 1992 book "Capital Ideas: The Improbable Origins of Modern Wall Street" traced the intellectual history of modern portfolio theory — covering Markowitz, Sharpe, Modigliani, Miller, Samuelson, Black, Scholes, and the other academics whose ideas transformed investment management. The book is considered the most readable account of how academic finance became practice. His 1996 book "Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk" became his masterpiece — a 500,000-copy bestseller that traces the history of humanity's relationship with risk and probability from ancient Greece to the development of modern statistics, probability theory, and risk management tools. The book reveals how the ability to measure and manage risk was a precondition for capitalism and modern economic growth. Bernstein continued writing and consulting into his 80s and passed away in 2009 at age 90. He is remembered as the most eloquent bridge between academic finance theory and investment practice.
