Pekka Lundmark became president and CEO of Nokia in 2020, leading the Finnish company through its second reinvention. Nokia famously dominated the mobile phone industry before being disrupted by Apple's iPhone and Google's Android. After selling its phone business to Microsoft, Nokia pivoted to telecommunications infrastructure and is now one of three major global suppliers of 5G radio access networks, core networks, and transport equipment — competing with Sweden's Ericsson and China's Huawei. Lundmark has restructured Nokia around four business groups: Network Infrastructure (IP routing, optical, fixed access), Mobile Networks (5G radio equipment), Cloud and Network Services, and Nokia Technologies (patent licensing). The patent licensing business deserves special attention: Nokia holds approximately 20,000 patent families essential to 5G, Wi-Fi, and multimedia standards, generating high-margin royalty income from smartphone manufacturers, automakers, and other device makers. Lundmark's execution on 5G market share against Ericsson and Huawei, enterprise networking growth, patent licensing revenue, and cost structure optimization are the primary drivers of the stock.
