Pedro Pablo Kuczynski

Investment Banker & Former President of Peru · First Boston / World Bank (formerly)

Peru and Latin American political economy, investment banking in emerging markets, World Bank development policy, Latin American fiscal reform

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, known as PPK, spent decades as a prominent investment banker and economist before entering politics. He worked at the World Bank as an economist, then at First Boston and other investment banks where he advised on Latin American infrastructure and capital markets transactions. He served as Peru's Minister of Finance (2001-2002) and Prime Minister under Alejandro Toledo. He was elected President of Peru in 2016, representing a market-oriented vision for economic development. His presidency was cut short by political controversy and he resigned in 2018. His career exemplifies the revolving door between Wall Street investment banking and Latin American political leadership, and his economic ideas influenced Peru's market-oriented economic policies of the 2000s-2010s. During his time at the Ministry of Finance, he implemented fiscal discipline measures and strengthened Peru's public debt management framework, helping establish the country's investment-grade credit standing in international markets.
