Pavel Marinychev is the CEO of Alrosa, the world's largest diamond mining company by volume, producing approximately 30% of the world's rough diamonds. Headquartered in Yakutia (Sakha Republic) in Russia's Far East, Alrosa operates some of the world's richest diamond deposits, including the legendary Udachny and Mir pipes. The Russian state (federal and regional governments of Yakutia) holds a controlling stake in the company. Alrosa faces an unprecedented combination of challenges. Western sanctions imposed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine have restricted Alrosa's access to major diamond trading centers (particularly Antwerp) and key consumer markets. The G7's diamond import ban and the emerging provenance tracking system for rough diamonds have forced Alrosa to redirect sales toward India, China, the Middle East, and other non-aligned markets. Simultaneously, the natural diamond industry faces existential competitive pressure from lab-grown diamonds, which have dramatically fallen in price and gained consumer acceptance. Marinychev's key decisions involve navigating the sanctions regime to maintain sales volumes, managing production levels to support diamond prices, developing alternative trade routes and marketing channels, addressing the lab-grown diamond competitive threat, and sustaining operational efficiency in some of the world's most challenging mining environments (permafrost, extreme cold). Alrosa's Moscow-listed stock reflects both its operational performance and the broader sanctions and geopolitical risk premium on Russian assets.
