Mark Wiseman
Canadian pension fund management, global PE co-investing, institutional long-term investing, direct investing by pension funds, BlackRock strategy
Mark Wiseman served as President and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) from 2012 to 2016, having joined as a senior executive earlier. He was instrumental in transforming CPPIB from a passive index investor into one of the most sophisticated active institutional investors globally, building significant capabilities in private equity, infrastructure, real estate, and hedge fund investments through direct deals rather than just fund investments. His model of direct investing by the pension fund itself — rather than through external fund managers — influenced many institutional investors globally. He subsequently joined BlackRock as Global Head of Active Equities, but left following a personal conduct matter. The CPPIB model he helped build — internalizing investment management at scale rather than outsourcing to external managers — has since been adopted by several other large public pension funds seeking to reduce fees and build proprietary investment capabilities.
