Padraig McDonnell

President & CEO of Agilent Technologies · Agilent Technologies

global

Padraig McDonnell assumed the role of President and CEO of Agilent Technologies in March 2025, inheriting leadership of one of the world's premier analytical instrumentation companies. Agilent was spun off from Hewlett-Packard in 1999 and has since evolved into a focused life sciences and diagnostics powerhouse with annual revenues exceeding $6 billion. The company's instruments — mass spectrometers, chromatography systems, spectroscopy equipment, and genomics tools — are essential infrastructure in pharmaceutical development, clinical diagnostics, food safety testing, and environmental analysis laboratories worldwide. McDonnell, an Irishman who rose through Agilent's ranks, takes the helm at a challenging moment. The biotech and pharmaceutical industries entered a spending downturn in 2023-2024 as post-pandemic stimulus faded, venture funding contracted, and customers digested excess instrument capacity purchased during COVID. Agilent's revenues declined as these end markets pulled back, pressuring the stock. His strategic priorities include navigating the current cyclical downturn while positioning Agilent for recovery, expanding the company's recurring revenue streams (services, consumables, and software), driving growth in the NASD (nucleic acid solutions) business that supplies oligonucleotides for mRNA therapeutics, and evaluating tuck-in acquisitions. Agilent's stock is closely correlated with biotech funding cycles and pharmaceutical R&D spending trends.
