Oliver Bäte

Oliver Bäte became CEO of Allianz SE in May 2015, having spent most of his career at the company after joining in 2008 from McKinsey, where he was a senior partner leading the global insurance practice. He quickly rose through Allianz, becoming CFO before being named to the top role. Allianz under Bäte is the world's largest insurance company by revenue (over €150 billion annually) and one of the most important financial institutions in Europe. The group operates across three segments: Property/Casualty insurance (the core underwriting business), Life/Health insurance, and Asset Management. The asset management division — comprising PIMCO (the world's largest active fixed-income manager) and Allianz Global Investors — manages over €2.4 trillion in assets, making it one of the world's top five asset managers. Bäte's tenure faced its most severe test in 2022 when Allianz was hit with a $6 billion settlement and SEC charges related to the Structured Alpha funds scandal — a U.S.-based hedge fund unit that suffered massive losses during the March 2020 market crash and was found to have misled investors about its risk management practices. The scandal resulted in criminal charges against fund managers and a guilty plea by the U.S. subsidiary. Bäte navigated this crisis by cooperating fully with regulators, paying restitution, and refocusing the company on its core insurance and mainstream asset management businesses. Strategically, Bäte has pushed Allianz toward digital transformation — investing in direct-to-consumer platforms, telematics-based auto insurance, and AI-driven claims processing. He has also expanded Allianz's presence in high-growth Asian markets, particularly China and India. His long-term vision is to make Allianz more of a technology-enabled financial services platform than a traditional insurance conglomerate.
